Oyster tours, tastings, and food festivals can be found in many coastal communities across the country, offering visitors the chance to step onto working farms, meet local producers, and taste oysters fresh from the sea.

Plus, many restaurants have oysters on their menus when in season (September through April).

From County Sligo on the Wild Atlantic Way to Galway and Carlingford, here are some of the best oyster experiences to consider adding to your itinerary.

The Sligo Oyster Experience

If you’re looking for the most immersive oyster experience in Ireland, this one is hard to beat.

It offers not just one oyster experience but four separate tours, giving oyster lovers the chance to taste oysters year-round and indoors.

Its farm tour is part coastal walk, part storytelling session, and part hands-on tasting, all led by a local Sligo businesswoman who knows these waters inside and out.

Expect a guided walk along the coast with stunning views of Knocknarea and Benbulben, an insight into how oysters are cultivated in Sligo’s water, a live shucking demonstration, the chance to taste fresh oysters right where they’re harvested, and the opportunity to forage along the shore while hearing some local storytelling along the way.

Beyond the shoreline visit, owner Aisling Kelly‑Hunter offers two oyster tasting experiences at WB’s Coffee House in Sligo town, as well as private tours for a more personalized introduction to Sligo oysters.

Visitor experiences include an Oyster Farm and Tasting Experience offered by DK Connemara Oysters that includes a hands-on, behind-the-scenes excursion with working oyster farmers where you will get the chance to try your hand at shucking and then taste fresh oysters directly from the sea.

The company also offers a private tour.

Other similar oyster experiences include one offered by Kelly’s Oysters, a third-generation family business in Kilcolgan that offers a tour where you can wade through the waters and see native oysters being harvested.

Learn about the history of oyster farming in Galway and finish off your experience with an oyster tasting, a glass of local craft beer and traditional brown soda bread.

If you’re looking for a restaurant experience that’s centered around oysters, you absolutely must visit Moran’s the Weir, an excellent eatery that is actually a thatched cottage.

Moran’s is a family business established during the 1800s.

In Galway City, be sure to take a food tour, which often includes an oyster tasting.

County Louth

The town of Carlingford, located on the shores of Carlingford Lough in County Louth, is renowned for its oysters and hosts the annual Carlingford Oyster Festival each August.

Oysters have been linked to the town for centuries, with a brisk trade recorded between Carlingford and Dublin in the late 18th century, with some historical records pointing to local oyster cultivation as far back as the Roman Empire.

Some of the best oyster experiences on Ireland’s east coast can be found in Carlingford, County Louth.

The Carlingford Oyster Company is the main provider of oysters to the region. While they don’t advertise tours on their website, it’s worth contacting them for a private oyster experience.

You could, however, gain some insight into local oyster farming in Louth by taking a food tour in town.

Their signature oyster farm tour includes an insight into the equipment and methods that they use to nurture the local oysters, bringing them from seed to market.

A tasting is included.

Other experiences in Kerry that center around oysters can be found at the Dingle Food Festival, held each year in October.

Food Markets that Offer Oyster Tastings

If you prefer a more casual setting, several Irish food markets offer the chance to sample oysters straight from local producers.

The Galway Market, which is open at the weekends, regularly features vendors selling fresh Galway Bay oysters, while Cork’s English Market, open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., is home to fishmongers who often shuck oysters to order.

In Dublin, the Temple Bar Food Market, open every Saturday from 9 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., sometimes includes seafood stalls offering oysters, depending on the season and vendors.

Other oyster tasting opportunities might be found at the Milk Market in Limerick, which has formed part of the city since 1852. It is open at the weekends only, with Saturday being the busiest day.

Whether you’re stepping onto a shoreline farm in Sligo, ordering Galway Bay oysters in the city, or sampling Carlingford Lough oysters by the harbor, there are plenty of ways to experience this distinctly Irish coastal tradition.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these oyster experiences or if one of them has made its way into your Ireland travel itinerary.
