Mary O’Sullivan: Mary G Tours

This feature is part of an ongoing series where I highlight trusted members of my networks from the Ireland Travel Planning Tips Facebook Group—people who are passionate about helping you experience Ireland in a more authentic and stress-free way.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what inspired you to get into the tourism industry?

With over 30 years of experience in the tourism industry, I’ve dedicated my career to creating meaningful and memorable journeys through Ireland.

I hold formal qualifications in Irish history, genealogy, and folklore from University College Cork, which allow me to offer guests a much deeper understanding of the country beyond what you’ll find in guidebooks.
My passion comes from a lifelong connection to Ireland’s stories, including its people, its past, and its traditions. I was inspired to create Mary G Tours to offer a more refined, personal experience where guests can truly connect with Ireland in an authentic and enriching way.

I see that you offer private day tours and multi-day tours. What types of travelers are the best fit for your tours and what can they expect from these experiences?

My tours are designed for travelers who value comfort, exclusivity, and depth of experience. Many of my guests are couples, families, or small private groups  who are looking for a seamless, high-quality journey tailored entirely to their interests.

Guests can expect a curated experience with a strong emphasis on storytelling, heritage, and access, whether that’s tracing family roots, exploring Ireland’s cultural history, or enjoying exceptional food and hospitality. Every detail is thoughtfully planned, while still allowing flexibility and spontaneity.

On a private day tour, what would a typical itinerary include?

Each itinerary is bespoke, but a typical private day might include a scenic drive through some of Ireland’s most beautiful landscapes, visits to historic estates or ancient sites, and time in charming villages that reflect true Irish character.

For those interested in heritage, I can incorporate genealogical insights, helping guests connect with their Irish ancestry in a meaningful way. The day is paced comfortably, with time to enjoy each location without feeling rushed.

Lots of people in the Ireland Travel Planning Tips Facebook group ask about places to eat and local pub experiences. Do you include any of that in your tours?

Absolutely. Exceptional food and authentic pub experiences are an essential part of any great Irish journey.

These moments often become highlights for guests, offering not just great food but a genuine connection to Irish culture.

Do you have a favorite county or region that you like to bring visitors to and why?

The West of Ireland holds a special place in my heart. Its dramatic coastlines, rich history, and strong cultural traditions offer an experience that feels both timeless and deeply authentic.

It’s a region where Ireland’s spirit is truly alive, and it never fails to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

What do you love most about being a tour guide in Ireland?

What I value most is creating meaningful connections — between my guests and Ireland, and often between guests and their own heritage.

Whether it’s uncovering a family story or simply sharing a beautiful place, it’s incredibly rewarding to provide experiences that stay with people long after they return home.

How would you describe your guiding style in three words?

Refined, insightful, personal.

What makes a tour with Mary G Tours different from other experiences in Ireland?

Mary G Tours offers a level of depth and personalization that goes far beyond standard touring. My academic background in Irish history, genealogy, and folklore — combined with decades of experience — allows me to bring Ireland’s stories to life in a way that is both engaging and meaningful.

What advice would you give travelers trying to experience Ireland without overspending?

Even at a higher level of travel, value comes from thoughtful planning. Focus on experiences that truly matter to you rather than trying to do everything.

Private guiding can actually enhance value by saving time, avoiding unnecessary detours, and ensuring every moment is meaningful.

Any tips for those who have a limited amount of time in Ireland?

For those with limited time, I always recommend a focused, well-curated itinerary. Rather than trying to see the entire country, choose one or two regions and explore them in depth.

A private, guided experience allows you to maximize your time while still enjoying a relaxed and immersive journey.
